At La Retraite we have a number of students who act as carer for a family member.
We are so impressed by their commitment and fully appreciate the extra pressures that they sometimes face. We are lucky to have a flourishing Young Carers group at our school, and the students meet with Jenni, from the local project, during lunchtime on a Wednesday, a few times each half term.
They have lunch together and sometimes they organise out of school activities. Some of our students are also members of their local Young Carers Project which can offer support in a number of ways as outlined below.
Young Carers Project
Young Carers is a group for pupils at La Retraite who care for a family member whose life is affected by looking after someone with a disability or a long-term illness.
Young carers often take on a level of responsibility that is not expected at their age. We occasionally go on trips to relax away from all the responsibilities that we have at home. This enables us to go and have fun. When we go to our meeting it gives you time to interact with people who are in the same situation as you and who understand what you are feeling.
If you are interested and feel that you are a young carer, then you should speak to Miss Ungaro or there will be a new poster by the canteen with the dates when we shall be meeting again after the Easter break. Please pop along to one of our meetings you will be very welcome.
