Studying Classical Civilisation – A Student’s PerspectivePosted on: 14th Apr 2021
We caught up with Classical Civilisation student Kadijah, to find out more about the current topic she is studying:
Taking classical civilisation has opened my eyes in the world of literature, history, and art history. In the subjects you use a range of skills to answer a range of questions from looking at mosaics and vases to explaining the importance of an epithet of a character in the Odyssey to giving an opinion if Hetairas had a better life than upper class women. Although my experience has been disrupted by the pandemic and most of my learning has been online, I still have learned lots and engage in the online lessons we do have.
It’s very helpful if you are going off to do any liberal arts (English, history, art history, music etc), politics, social sciences or sociology as the classical period had a lot of impact on the way the world works. There are many references to the classical period in literature that can broaden your knowledge on the literature you’re reading as well.
Overall if you aren’t going to do an occupation that didn’t relate to classics it’s great to just be educated on one of the most talked about and influential periods in human history.
