Ruth Coyle: Our Director of Sixth Form - National Strategic Lead for the AoCPosted on: 28th Jan 2021
The La Retraite 6 prides itself on delivering outstanding vocational education for over 20 years. The opportunity to further develop our vocational provision arose two years ago, when the Department of Education gave institutions the chance to be involved in the delivery of a new Technical qualification, the T Level.
Our Director of Sixth Form Ruth Coyle has been pioneering the T Level courses within our Sixth Form and working closely with businesses and organisations to ensure the highest levels of engagement, standards of teaching and learning and maximise student outcomes.
We are thrilled that Ruth has been asked to be one of 10 National Strategic Leads for the Association of Colleges, a role that will allow her to act as a T Level Advisor and develop systems to support organisations rolling out T Levels. We caught up with Ruth to find out more about the qualification, and her partnership with the AoC.
“Offering the T Level qualification is a fantastic opportunity for our students. Often vocational students are not given the recognition they deserve, whereas T Levels give students a real edge over those that take the traditional academic route, by helping students to develop the skills they require for the workplace through a 45-day industry placement. I believe T Levels will improve the social mobility of our students and help address the local skills shortages in South London; we have chosen to deliver Digital, Education and Childcare, Construction, Health midwifery and Media T Levels.
"The AoC first contacted me to join a panel, which was established to create an outline for the T Level transition course. This is a Level 2 Course which students are able to utilise as a stepping stone onto a T Level. At the La Retraite 6, our course is called Route2Three and includes a resit in Maths and English and an OCR Technical Qualification in Business and Digital Media. The course also involves work experience and the Level 3 ASDAN Certificate of Personal Effectiveness.
"From this work, the AoC then offered the opportunity to present at conferences about our experience with delivering T Levels, which led to me being invited to become part of the National T Level Advisor group.
"My role provides a great opportunity for the La Retraite 6 to showcase all the excellent work we do; and share our good practise with others to benefit other institutions and students. We look forward to working alongside the DfE to be involved in the production of a National Marketing Campaign for T Levels and hope that exposure at a national level will help us to increase our employer engagement, to ultimately benefit and enhance the experience for our students”.
